Bio

Andrew Murphy was born in Sydney, Australia. He began his dance training in Canberra with
Betsy Sawers and Sandra Griffin. Andrew joined The Australian Ballet in 1989 where he rose
to the rank of senior artist. Andrew also danced as a principal artist with the Birmingham
Royal Ballet and the Houston Ballet.


He has performed leading roles in all the major classical productions, as well as in a wide
range of contemporary ballets including works by Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine,
James Kudelka, Natalie Weir, John Cranko, Twyla Tharp, Jerome Robbins, and Kenneth
McMillan. Andrew also personally worked with great choreographers such as David Bintley,
JiÅ™í Kylián, Christopher Bruce, Glen Tetley, Ben Stevenson, Stephen Baynes, Ronald Hynd,
Stanton Welch, Mark Morris, Hans Van Manen, and Graeme Murphy AO.

 

After retiring from the stage in 2008, Andrew joined the staff of Houston Ballet Academy
where he became Principal Instructor and Boys Program Coordinator. He participated in the
collaboration between Houston Ballet Second Company and San Francisco Trainee
Performances and has coached many Prix de Lausanne participants and Prize Winners.


Andrew has taught as a guest for Houston Ballet, The Australian Ballet, Studio Wayne
Macgregor, Colorado Ballet, Colorado Ballet School and the University of Hawaii.

Andrew Murphy joined The Australian Ballet School as Artistic Teacher of Classical Dance
and Ballet Master in 2017.
