BACKSTAGE with Blake John Wood

How old were you when you started dancing?

"My parents first enrolled me in dance classes at the age of five!"

Tell us about your training..

"I grew up training at the Australian Dance & Talent Centre in Newcastle, NSW. Believe it or not, my first & favourite dance style was actually tap! Over the years, I enrolled in all other styles & fell in love with jazz. In 2013, I moved to Sydney & completed a two year Performing Arts Diploma Course at ED5 International followed

by the SHOW BUSINESS Development Program lead by Marko Panzic & Katie Sanchez in 2016."

What was your first professional job?

"My first professional job was a Summer Music Campaign for MTV Australia & New Zealand."

What has been a favourite on stage moment?

"Majority of the time, I’m working behind the scenes which I am in love with - BUT I would have to say that one of my favourite on stage moments would be dancing for the sensational Deborah Cox on her mini Australian Tour which I was also able to share with a bunch of my closest friends!"

What do you wish you had known as a young dancer that you now know as a professional?

"I wish I had known not to compare myself so much to others. Everyone is on their own unique journey and you are best to not concern yourself with what others are doing. Trust the timing of your life! It took me so long to grasp this concept but I truly believe it is one of THE most important things to remember. Ever."

What advice would you give to young dancers who want to become professional?

"Without sounding super cliché, it all comes down to the work you put in. There are no short cuts! Self-belief & hard work will always earn you results. Be authentic, consistent, patient and KIND."

What does 2019 hold for you?

"Each year has been completely different for me which I love because it keeps everything exciting & fresh. Work usually pops up at the last minute, but I also have a few projects in mind for this year which I’m really pumped to get started on.

Blake was Dance Director of Marquee Sydney, Choreographer for Havana Brown's “Glimpse” Music Video, and has also worked with Universal Music Australia, MTV Australia & New Zealand & the Disney Channel. Don't miss Blake's Commercial class at VDF!
