Bio

Al (Albert) Blackstone is an Emmy-winning director, choreographer, and educator. A former Broadway performer, his passion for bringing people together to experience something meaningful drives him to create.⁠

Al Blackstone's work spans musical theatre, TV, film, and concert. Perhaps best known for his witty and emotional dances for So You Think You Can Dance, Al was nominated twice for an Emmy Award for his work on the show, winning the 2020 Emmy for Best Choreography.⁠

As a Director, Choreographer and Associate Choreographer, Al has a great passion for the collaborative spirit of the musical theater. His direction of revivals Guys and Dolls, Annie and An American in Paris have infused these classic stories with his dynamic staging and choreography.⁠

Original dance narratives include Happy We’ll Be (Roseland Ballroom), Elephant in the Room & Show on the Road (Arts on Site) and Freddie Falls in Love (Joyce Theater). He has been commissioned to make work for companies such as 10 Hairy Legs and universities such as Point Park, Pace, Marymount Manhattan College, and University of the Arts. He has choreographed for 5 seasons of Fire Island Dance Festival.⁠

Born in New Jersey and raised in a studio, he calls Brooklyn, New York home. Currently the Resident Choreographer at Giordano Dance Chicago, he is on faculty at Press Play, Steps on Broadway, The Juilliard School (guest faculty), and MOMEN NYC which he co-founded in 2020 with his husband Abraham Lule. ⁠
