Bio
Scimm. Dance are redefining contemporary dance in Australia. With a commitment to innovation, storytelling, and pushing physical boundaries, our work fuses classical ballet foundations with contemporary athleticism and a commercial edge—creating a distinct movement language that is both raw and refined.
Founded and led by Artistic Directors Scott Pokorny and Tim Barnes in 2013, Scimm. Dance has become a driving force in the dance industry, delivering cutting-edge performances and transformative training experiences for the next generation of dancers in contemporary dance.
Scott and Tim’s choreographic vision has led to some of Scimm. Dance’s most groundbreaking productions, including professional seasons of Mechorstra, which won the People’s Choice Award at the 2023 Melbourne Fringe Festival, Paracosm, which continues to captivate audiences with its immersive world-building, and most recently Reflector, which moved queer audiences with its compelling and emotional storytelling and high fashion aesthetics. Their impact extends beyond the stage, with the duo recently commissioned to choreograph for the 2025 & 2026 Australian Open, a milestone that highlights their ability to blend dance, spectacle, and large-scale event storytelling.
With individual backgrounds spanning The Australian Ballet, international conventions, cruise ships and major commercial projects, Scott and Tim bring a wealth of experience to their work—shaping the future of contemporary dance in Australia.
The boys have also recently started their own full time contemporary course, Scimm. Dance Pre-Professional. Now in its third year, the course is flourishing with both talent, skill and an incredibly nurturing environment.
Scott and Tim are thrilled to be invited back to VDF and can’t wait to share their movement, energy, and vision with everyone in class once again!
